The implementation of HVO at service stations

HVO – an ecological alternative to traditional diesel

OMV Slovensko often applies the approach of enhancing the range of its services by implementing “new energy” technologies at already existing service stations rather than relying solely on new construction.

This is exactly the case at one of their latest projects. They added HVO as an ecological alternative fuel to the portfolio of traditional fuels. One of their service stations is located in the industrial zone in Dolný Hričov near Žilina, close to the Žilina airport. Another one is located in Ivanka pri Dunaji near Bratislava, also in an industrial park and close to the Bratislava airport.

These locations face busy traffic as it is situated in an area where thousands of drivers pass by on a daily basis.

These service stations have the potential of being intensively used by the drivers. The more drivers and vehicles pass, the higher the likelihood that among these vehicles, there will also be those with diesel engines. Among the drivers, there will be those who are interested in the environment and a sustainable approach to it as well.

What is HVO?

HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil) is a type of renewable synthetic diesel fuel that is increasingly used as an ecological alternative to fossil diesel.
  • Lower CO₂ emissions: CO₂ emissions are significantly lower (by 65%) compared to fossil fuels.
  • Cleaner combustion: HVO has a higher cetane number than regular diesel.
  • Reduced load on the engine: HVO is free of sulfur, aromatic compounds, and other impurities.
  • Compatibility with current diesel engines: HVO can be used directly in modern diesel engines without the need for modifications.
  • Advantages in the winter: better operational performance at low temperatures.
  • Renewability and sustainability: HVO is produced from waste vegetable and animal fats.
  • Possibility of blending with fossil diesel: gradual transition to renewable fuels.

Project preparation

At these service stations, dispensing technology was available for all types of fuels, except for HVO. OMV Slovensko has decided to be the first in Slovakia to install HVO dispensing technology for personal vehicles. Before, HVO was available only at one location in Slovakia, solely for trucks. These works had to be processed at existing gas stations that already offered charging services for electric vehicles.

Project realisation

TSG was responsible for the necessary preparation and modification of fuel tanks to be ready for the next type of fuel. Because the dispensers of traditional fuels had already been installed, they had to be adjusted to meet the customer’s requirements for the desired use of the dispenser. The final version of the dispensers offers two types of diesel, two types of gasoline and hydrogenated vegetable oil.

In both cases, HVO was implemented as an additional type of fuel at the service station that had already been equipped with charging solutions. This has turned them into the first stations in Slovakia to provide services not only for users of traditional fuels, but also for progressive drivers who support sustainable mobility. Either in the form of electric vehicles or by using HVO as fuel, which stands for sustainable alternative to fossil diesel.

Ecological mobility

OMV Slovensko is a service station operator that demonstrates its positive attitude towards the environment in Slovakia from two perspectives.

Perspective: The service stations

The first one is the perspective of the service stations, as many of them are equipped with solar panels. Solar installations ensure more ecological operation of the service station itself, which has then capacity to cover at least a part of its energy demands by generating its own electricity.

Perspective: EV drivers

The second perspective is that one of EV drivers, as many OMV Slovensko service stations provide charging solutions for electric vehicle drivers, whose number is no longer negligible.

The installation of charging stations contributes to the sustainability of mobility. HVO is also the sustainable mobility fuel and its undeniable advantage is represented by minimal or zero entry costs for the vehicle owner.
